CHAPTER ELEVEN

Fortunately, I only fainted for a few seconds. When I woke up from the slapping on my cheeks and opened my eyes, I realized I was still on the street, near the scene. People were slowly dispersing, police were already working intensively around Alice's body, one of them was talking on a walkie-talkie. Most likely, he was demanding to locate the car.

Damn, the car!

"The license plate," I whispered, not understanding why I was so weak and why I couldn't even escape from Han's grip. Yes, he was inexplicably there. Moreover, he had taken a seat on the bench and laid my head on his lap. It was a

bit harsh, but oddly pleasing. Despite the fact that Han is a rare jerk.

"What about the license plate?" He looked concerned and annoyed. "Eve, what's wrong with you? I just touched you, you jerked and nearly fell onto the asphalt."

"Shut up," I advised weakly, trying to get up. Han calmly laid me back down, as if I were a kitten, and sternly said:

"Lay down, you're pale and shaking. I was about to call the medics."

"No need, it's just nerves. The license plate! I remembered the license plate of the car that hit Alice!"

"You knew her?"

"I was on my way to meet her! She was hit right in front of me." A dry sob escaped me then. "It's all because of the scarf. She was going to tell me something."

I continued to lie there, seeing Han's face hovering above me. A deeply troubled face with tightly pressed lips.

"Wait, Eve..."

"Did I already advise you to shut up? You're nothing to me," I let him know, attempting to stand again. This time Han didn't try to hold me, but he also didn't leave. He crossed his arms over his chest, gloomily watching my struggle. Frankly, I had other concerns right now.

I was about to call Burt, to tell him everything, to hand over the scarf, and to hope that the police would solve all the problems. By the way, as soon as I hand over the scarf, I plan to shut myself in my apartment and not leave until I finish my project. Given that there's still a couple of months' worth of work, I'd probably go feral and start flinching at people. And Han will go home with Irene. Let them do whatever they want: marry, divorce, have children, argue. I'm clearly the odd one out here.

It took a long time for Burt to answer his phone. When he did, his voice sounded exhausted and far from joyful.

"It's Eve," I rushed.

"I have your phone number," he informed me. "Something happened?"

"People are getting killed over the scarf," I hurriedly informed him. "It's all my fault. I didn't say it right away. I was supposed to meet... and they ran her over... like Judy... oh my God!"

Once again, a silent wave of panic overcame me, stealing away my ability to think. I even let Han take the phone from me.

"Good evening," he decided to chat with Burt himself, "this is Eve's friend, Han Zegers.
